Although Primus Telecom is a U.S.-based service provider, its influence has been mainly known in other countries such as Canada and Australia. Now that's going to change. Starting with an expansion into the Chicago business market, the hosted IP PBX service provider is going to up its presence in the U.S. market. Primus will open an office in Chicago to pursue small to mid-sized businesses and then expand into other U.S. regions.
Overseeing the service provider's move into Chicago's SMB market is Kevin Weber, who currently serves as the director for Primus' U.S. Business Field Sales and Operations. Weber has an established track record in building national presence for competitive service providers. Prior to coming to Primus, Weber built Cbeyond's nationwide sales arm.
Primus has a few things in its pocket already that will help it establish a beachhead in the U.S business market. Over its own network backbone, the service provider has been selling international long distance and wholesale data, which both make up 25 percent of its overall sales. However, Primus did not have a direct sales channel to target U.S. businesses.
